APCO Applauds Congress for Passage of Bipartisan VoIP 9-1-1 Bill
June 24, 2008, Washington, DC - The Association of Public-Safety Communications Officials (APCO) International today applauded Congress for passing a compromise bill that requires Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) service providers to provide 9-1-1 service, including enhanced 9-1-1 (E9-1-1) service, to their subscribers.
H.R. 3403 provides necessary legislative solutions to ensure that VoIP services are able to comply with their 9-1-1 and E9-1-1 obligations and ensures state and local authority to collect 9-1-1 fees. It will now go to the President for his signature to be signed into law.
"As new communications technologies emerge we have to make sure our current regulations provide the necessary framework to build a stronger emergency communications network," APCO International President Willis Carter said. "APCO International is pleased that this legislation provides the necessary forward looking legislative solution that can move our nation's 9-1-1 networks into the next generation of technological advances."
