APCO ANNOUNCES INTENT TO DEVELOP STANDARDS FOR BUILD OUT OF 700 MHz BROADBAND NETWORK
October 14, 2009, Alexandria, Va. - The Association of Public-Safety Communications Officials (APCO) International today announced its intent to develop standards for 700 MHz broadband networks. This effort builds on recent actions of APCO International, the Public Safety Spectrum Trust (PSST) and the National Public Safety Telecommunications Council (NPSTC) Broadband Network Requirement Task Force. In reviewing the PSST-endorsed report, APCO International will identify gaps and set standards in those areas where none currently exist and where standards are necessary to ensure roaming and interoperability among localities and regions that intend to build out 700 MHz broadband networks.
"As an ANSI-accredited Standards Developer, APCO International is the only organization that is dedicated to ensuring public safety communications has a role in the development of standards that affect our industry and is uniquely positioned to move this effort forward," APCO International Executive Director George S. Rice, Jr. said. "APCO International's standards efforts are critical not only to the development of a nationwide network but also to an early deployment."
APCO International will look to establish basic requirements necessary to ensure interoperability for the 700 MHz broadband network. This effort will also establish the technical and operational standards that public safety entities should use in procurement processes to satisfy the 700 MHz minimum roaming and interoperability requirements. Further, it will develop additional standards for network architecture and configuration that will allow optimal utilization of Long Term Evolution (LTE) technologies for the public safety broadband networks in the 700 MHz band. APCO International, along with other organizations, endorsed LTE as the standard for the 700 MHz public safety broadband network earlier this year.
